Remake of a Japanese classic shooter
The action title Rainbow Cotton is back in a remastered version developed by KRITZELKRATZ 3000. Now in 3D, the former Japanese exclusive cute ‘em up is serving cuteness on modern platforms. With gameplay intact and a dedicated retro mode added, this shoot 'em up will take you on a trip down memory lane riding a broomstick.
Rainbow Cotton is a rail shooter game similar to Crimson Dragon, where you have to proceed on a set path. The game follows the titular young witch and her friend on their quest to defeat an evil demon and recover a stolen candy.
Enhanced magical experience
Part of the Japanese arcade series Cotton, which became a household name in the 90s, Rainbow Cotton is the remake of its fifth installment of the same name. At its core, the game remains unchanged. It is still the same rail shooter, where you assume the title character, a young and bubbly witch named Cotton, on her mission to end the evil rule of a demon called Tweed.
Likewise, you must retrieve the stolen legendary Willow candy and return it to York Country. Cotton’s trusty fairy friend, Silk, has also stayed to help you. On a broomstick, you must fly through each level, destroying enemy formations with magical projectiles, avoiding their attacks, and defeating the boss. Plus, you can power up by collecting crystals during the battles. As a remake, nonetheless, the game boasts noticeable improvements.
It has received a complete 3D graphics overhaul with particle effects and ambient occlusion, offering a more immersive experience across modern platforms. What’s more, it boasts a dedicated retro mode and anime cutscenes, catering to hardcore and nostalgic fans. Other improvements include localization in six languages and enhanced controls. For some players, though, these changes feel underwhelming, with shortcomings like the lack of an autofire feature.
Charm level boosted
While some fans are disappointed with the treatment of the Rainbow Cotton remake, which for them is unimpressive, one cannot deny that the classic game is much more charming and engaging than ever before. With 3D visuals and improved controls, you can experience its magic once more on modern platforms. The game even features a retro mode for those who want to play it in the original.
